Counselling Hypnotherapy for Cell Phone, Screen and Social Media Addiction

The nature of social media and the Internet has recently changed. There is a collective grieving with the loss of knowing if what you were seeing online is true or authentic. What is left is a sea of images/video/sounds with risks of privacy violations and loss of digital sovereignty. There are media messages that are often apocalyptic, leading to doom scrolling. We are led by algorithms designed to create stress.  Very quickly, the reasons for being online, such as community connection, marketing for business or shared interests are becoming less present or fading.

Suddenly, you realize that looking at your phone and social media doesn’t bring the same joy anymore and, in fact, it is causing sadness and anxiety. You drastically want to reduce its presence in your life but, for some reason, you keep picking up your phone every ten minutes without even thinking about it…

Here are a few steps to try:

Step 1 – Decide you want to decenter your cell phone, internet and social media in your life. This declaration is important…nothing will change unless you commit to the decision.

Step 2 – Set clear boundaries about how much time you want to spend with social media, internet or your phone each day and highlight what you will gain by reducing its presence in your life. I recommend a goal of 10-15 minutes if social media a day unless your job requires more.

Step 3 – I strongly recommend deleting apps like Facebook, Instagram, etc. from your cell phone and only have them on a laptop or computer that you commit to your time limit each day. This will drastically reduce doom scrolling as, it takes away the automatic finger motion of scrolling on the cell phone.

There are other steps and strategies to decenter your cell phone and social media in your life. What you gain from decentering it is authentic connections, lived experience, presence and a deeper connection to nature that fosters joy. Much of what makes social media addictive is hypnotic techniques being used for the wrong reasons. Having a hypnotherapist knowledgeable in those processes and how to use them for good is an asset. Hypnotherapy can work to support your goals by speaking directly to the subconscious mind and address the inner programs that keep someone coming back to their cell phone. Counselling Hypnotherapy can get at the root of why this habit you want to change exists in the first place.
